Late Victorian Davenport Desk

Rosewood veneer with attractive inlay made from boxwood. This piece would benefit from minor restoration where the drawer fronts have shrunk lifting the veneer. For a keen restorer this is a straightforward job. This Davenport is furnished with a very attractive olive green skiver with gilded tooling. The French polishing is authentic and it doesn't need re-polishing. There are however 1 or 2 pieces of veneer missing around the base. Dimensions: Height-89cm, Width-61cm and Depth-61cm. Pretty light oak bookcase or plate display shelves. Maximum external measurements: 48 inches high, 36 inches wide and 7 inches deep. The shelves internal height from the bottom are 11 inches, 11 inches, 7.5 inches and 7.5 inches. The top shelf which is 7.5 inches has extra space to 11 inches behind the top decorative strip. The top three shelves all have a groove along their length about 1 inch from the back and could be used to display plates. The internal depth of the shelves in 5.5 inches. It has been in the family for several generations and could have been made by Bath Cabinet makers where my grandfather worked. It has some minor scratches on the top and a cup mark on one shelf as shown in the photos. Read more
