He was given the nickname “Re galantuomo” for not having repealed the Albertine statute, a name by which he is remembered today. Assisted by Prime Minister Camillo Benso, count of Cavour, he completed the national Risorgimento and the process of Italian unification. For these events is referred to as "father of the land".
