"The History of North East Shipbuilding", Dougan, D., George Allen & Unwin, London ()

* Pre-owned book with hardcover * Condition (book): good (unmarked pages) * Condition (dust jacket): fair * 258 pages (plus 8 monochrome plates holding 18 illustrations) At the end of the 19th century, the United Kingdom produced four out of every five ships built in the whole world, and the North East coast of England, stretching from Blyth in the North to Whitby in the South, was responsible for two out of those five ships. A government enquiry said that the United Kingdom performance was an industrial achievement almost without parallel. Clearly the contribution by the North East was a substantial one. Together with the river Clyde, the North East of England has been the major shipbuilding area in the country and until recently one of the main areas in the whole world. Yet this supremacy did not start to emerge until about half way through the 19th century when iron began to usurp wood and steam began to usurp sail. These two technical changes turned a craft into an industry and no area was as successful in adapting to the new era as the North west coast. Its natural resources of coal and iron were exploited by a group of brilliant entrepreneurs who literally fashioned the industry. They were responsible not only for organising production; they also stimulated technical innovations. The turbine engine was developed in the region; so was the oil tanker. There are many other examples. British - and North East - supremacy lasted for 100 years. By the 's competition from other countries and an inability to expand meant that British - and North East - shipbuilding had to yield its place as a world leader. Today Japan is almost as dominant as the United Kingdom was at the end of the 19th century. This story of the rise and fall of a great industry is not yet finished, however. In there were strong indications that the industry was going through a period of rejuvenation and reinvigoration, ready to challenge foreign competition more strongly than it had done in the 's and early l960's. The Landmark Arrian:The Campaigns of Alexander the Great Paperback – 15 Mar by James Romm

CAN DELIVER IF LOCAL Like new, unused copy of The Landmark Arrian:The Campaigns of Alexander the Great Paperback – 15 Mar by James Romm "During twelve years of continuous campaigns, Alexander conquered an empire that stretched from the shores of the Adriatic to the edge of modern India. Arrian's history of those conquests, the most reliable and detailed account to emerge from the ancient world, is a work that will fascinate readers interested in classical studies, the history of warfare, and the origins of East-West tensions that still simmer today in Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan. Drawing on Ptolemy's memoirs and other sources that have not survived antiquity, Arrian's portrait of Alexander is unmatched for its accuracy and immediacy. Having served as a high Roman official with command of an army, Arrian had a unique perspective on Alexander, imbued with a level of understanding that only firsthand military experience can provide. In the richly illustrated and annotated style of the Landmark series, The Campaigns of Alexander, which features an engaging and eloquent new translation by Pamela Mensch, brings together some of the pre-eminent classics scholars at work today to create what is certain to be the definitive edition of this essential work of history. About the Author James Romm is Professor of Classics at Bard College. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. His books include The Edges of the Earth in Ancient Thought and the forthcoming Ghost on the Throne: The Death of Alexander the Great and the War for Crown and Empire." Fourfront: Contemporary Stories Translated from the Irish

Fourfront: Contemporary Stories Translated from the Irish

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: O. Conghaile, Micheal / Titley, Alan / Breathnach, Padraic, PUBLISHER: Clo Iar-Chonnachta, Despite the richness of the short story in Irish literature, there remains a relative absence of stories translated from the Irish. This collection of stories aims to help fill this gap. Micheal O Conghaile is one of Ireland's foremost contemporary Irish-language prose writers. His stories are filled with dissidents and rebels, protagonists who find themselves suddenly revealed as "errata" in someone else's master narrative. Padraic Breathnach is probably the most prolific short story writer in Irish, with over 150. The four included here show isolated individuals struggling against inherited authority structures, and they may tell us more than any sociologist about the destiny of community. He is glorious and unmatched in his depiction of decay, the decay of social, cultural, and moral fabrics, of landscape and mind gone to seed. Dara O Conaola's stories share a real generic affinity with that other favored form of Gaelic tradition, the lyric poem. His stories are full of wonder and imagination. Lastly, Alan Titley is probably best known as a novelist. Politically, his stories probably represent a more radical, subversive side, while his language reveals a linguistic virtuosity that verges on the carnivalesque.
