"The History of North East Shipbuilding", Dougan, D., George Allen & Unwin, London ()

* Condition (dust jacket): fair * 258 pages (plus 8 monochrome plates holding 18 illustrations) At the end of the 19th century, the United Kingdom produced four out of every five ships built in the whole world, and the North East coast of England, stretching from Blyth in the North to Whitby in the South, was responsible for two out of those five ships. A government enquiry said that the United Kingdom performance was an industrial achievement almost without parallel. Clearly the contribution by the North East was a substantial one. Together with the river Clyde, the North East of England has been the major shipbuilding area in the country and until recently one of the main areas in the whole world. Yet this supremacy did not start to emerge until about half way through the 19th century when iron began to usurp wood and steam began to usurp sail. These two technical changes turned a craft into an industry and no area was as successful in adapting to the new era as the North west coast. Its natural resources of coal and iron were exploited by a group of brilliant entrepreneurs who literally fashioned the industry. They were responsible not only for organising production; they also stimulated technical innovations. The turbine engine was developed in the region; so was the oil tanker. There are many other examples. British - and North East - supremacy lasted for 100 years. By the 's competition from other countries and an inability to expand meant that British - and North East - shipbuilding had to yield its place as a world leader. Today Japan is almost as dominant as the United Kingdom was at the end of the 19th century. This story of the rise and fall of a great industry is not yet finished, however. In there were strong indications that the industry was going through a period of rejuvenation and reinvigoration, ready to challenge foreign competition more strongly than it had done in the s and early l960s. 500 Nations, an Illustrated History of North American Indians. Not a book for the Emotional

500 Nations, an Illustrated History of North American Indians. Not a book for the Emotional

500 NATIONS, By Alvin M.Josephy, jr An illustrated History of North American Indian nations. How they lived (and died). How the West was won, at the expense of almost every native tribe, from the Inca to the Inuit and almost every Plains and Desert dwelling tribe that occupied North America. Harrowing in many places, to read the documented accounts of how the numerous tribes were decimated by the invasion from the white man. Beautifully illustrated, with many archive publications depicting the primitive manner in which the tribes lived. Their own battles to survive, and the pacts that they formed. From Farmers to Warriors, this book has to be read from start to finish, in order to understand but a little of the harsh, yet wonderful lifestyles, that these ancient peoples endured. I found it difficult to put this book down once I started reading, and the picture really do bring the accounts to life, superbly written whilst maintaining a sense of accuracy from the research material used. With about 400 pages, it's difficult to know what to ask for such a work, I simply hope that whoever buys it will enjoy it as much as I, and be as impressed and emotionally humbled by the content as I was. THE SEARCH FOR SHANGRI-LA - A Journey Into Tibetan History, Charles Allen

HARDCOVER, pages crisp and clean book itself VG /excellent, dust jacket good plus, condition. The idea of a hidden refuge, a paradise far from the stresses of modern life, has universal appeal. In the writer James Hilton coined the word 'Shangri-La' to describe such a place, when he gave that name to a hidden valley in the Himalayas in his novel LOST HORIZON. In THE SEARCH FOR SHANGRI-LA acclaimed traveller and writer Charles Allen explores the myth behind the story. He tracks down the sources that Hilton drew upon in writing his popular romance, and then sets out to discover what lies behind the legend that inspired him. In the course of a lively and amusing account of his four journeys into Tibet, Allen also gives us a controversial new reading of the country's early history, shattering our notions of Tibet as a Buddhist paradise and restoring the mysterious pre-Buddhist religion of Bon to its rightful place in Tibetan culture. He also locates the lost kingdom of Shang-shung and, in doing so, the original Shangri-La itself: in an astounding gorge beyond the Himalayas, full of extraordinary ruins. pick up from Tollcross, Edinburgh. paul can post to UK for an Extra £3.00 Ad ID: Delivery Services Consumer Credit
