There are two layers of additional tracks: 9-16 and , you just swap them around -- individually or as groups of eight -- with the real tracks 1-8. In terms of semi-pro equipment, the R8 is perhaps the most advanced 8-Track ever made. It's also one of the easiest to use and best sounding. This was the last 8-Track Fostex made before switching to digital in the late 's, and is packed with the kind of features usually reserved for professional machines. First among these is the ability to sync it with your DAW, and have the sound of analogue tape with the convenience of digital recording. I've had half a dozen of them over the years, and always regretted letting them go.
