A Companion to Old Norse-Icelandic Literature and Culture (Paperback; )

A Companion to Old Norse-Icelandic Literature and Culture (Paperback; )

A Companion to Old Norse-Icelandic Literature and Culture edited by Rory McTurk. (ISBN ) Rory McTurk is Professor Emeritus of Icelandic Studies at the University of Leeds. Previously he taught at the Universities of Lund and Copenhagen and at University College, Dublin. This major survey of Old Norse-Icelandic literature and culture comprises 29 chapters written by leading scholars in the field, over a third of whom are Icelanders. At the same time, it conveys a sense of the mainland Scandinavian origins of the Icelandic people, and reflects the ongoing contact between Iceland and other countries and cultures. The volume highlights current debates among Old Norse-Icelandic scholars specializing in different aspects of the subject. Coverage of traditional topics is complemented by material on previously neglected areas of study, such as the sagas of Icelandic bishops and the translated knights' sagas. Chapters on 'archaeology', 'social institutions' and 'geography and travel' make it possible to view literature in its wider cultural context, while chapters on 'reception' and 'continuity' demonstrate the ways in which medieval Norse-Icelandic literature and culture overflow into the modern period. I am located in London and both post-delivery and collection are available. If interested in either of these two options, please feel free to contact me and ask for more information. Recentering Globalization: Popular Culture and Japanese

Recentering Globalization: Popular Culture and Japanese

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Iwabuchi, Koichi / Koichi Iwabuchi / Iwabuchi, PUBLISHER: Duke University Press, Globalization is usually thought of as the worldwide spread of Western--particularly American--popular culture. Yet if one nation stands out in the dissemination of pop culture in East and Southeast Asia, it is Japan. Pokemon, anime, pop music, television dramas such as "Tokyo Love Story "and "Long Vacation"--the export of Japanese media and culture is big business. In "Recentering Globalization, " Koichi Iwabuchi explores how Japanese popular culture circulates in Asia. He situates the rise of Japan's cultural power in light of decentering globalization processes and demonstrates how Japan's extensive cultural interactions with the other parts of Asia complicate its sense of being "in but above" or "similar but superior to" the region. Iwabuchi has conducted extensive interviews with producers, promoters, and consumers of popular culture in Japan and East Asia. Drawing upon this research, he analyzes Japan's "localizing" strategy of repackaging Western pop culture for Asian consumption and the ways Japanese popular culture arouses regional cultural resonances. He considers how transnational cultural flows are experienced differently in various geographic areas by looking at bilateral cultural flows in East Asia. He shows how Japanese popular music and television dramas are promoted and understood in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, and how "Asian" popular culture (especially Hong Kong's) is received in Japan. Rich in empirical detail and theoretical insight, "Recentering Globalization" is a significant contribution to thinking about cultural globalization and transnationalism, particularly in the context of East Asian cultural studies.

The Death of French Culture (Hardcover)

The Death of French Culture (Hardcover)

This book offers yet another delicious glimpse into a relationship that never ceases to fascinate, that between the US and France. It has taken an American to crystallize what France doesn't want to admit: that French culture is no longer an international force to be reckoned with. What is most compelling about it is the accuracy of Morrison's argument, combined with his deep affection for France. There is no rejoicing in his writing. Morrison's is a true lament. In his appraisal of France's growing incapa

The president of the United States traditionally serves as a symbol of power, virtue, ability, dominance, popularity, and patriarchy. In recent years, however, the high-profile candidacies of Hillary Clinton,Sarah Palin, and Michelle Bachmann have provoked new interest in gendered popular culture and how it influences Americans' perceptions of the country's highest political office. In this timely volume, editors Justin S. Media Making. Mass Media in a Popular Culture.

Media Making. Mass Media in a Popular Culture.

Taking a unique approach to the study of mass communication and cultural studies, Media Making is a volume that presents the current knowledge about the relationship between media, culture, and society. What sets this volume apart from competing texts is the approach taken and the distinguished scholarship. Rather than examining each major medium separately (newspapers, books, magazines, radio, television, film), the authors contend that mass communication cannot be studied apart from the other institutions in society and the other dimensions of social life-each is shaping and defining the other. They hold that media can only be understood in relation to their context-institutional, economic, social, cultural, and historical. As such, this book explores the variety of ways in which the media are involved in our social lives. Paperback. 442 pages. In good condition. A Sage Publication. Buyer collects.
