Recentering Globalization: Popular Culture and Japanese

Recentering Globalization: Popular Culture and Japanese

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Iwabuchi, Koichi / Koichi Iwabuchi / Iwabuchi, PUBLISHER: Duke University Press, Globalization is usually thought of as the worldwide spread of Western--particularly American--popular culture. Yet if one nation stands out in the dissemination of pop culture in East and Southeast Asia, it is Japan. Pokemon, anime, pop music, television dramas such as "Tokyo Love Story "and "Long Vacation"--the export of Japanese media and culture is big business. In "Recentering Globalization, " Koichi Iwabuchi explores how Japanese popular culture circulates in Asia. He situates the rise of Japan's cultural power in light of decentering globalization processes and demonstrates how Japan's extensive cultural interactions with the other parts of Asia complicate its sense of being "in but above" or "similar but superior to" the region. Iwabuchi has conducted extensive interviews with producers, promoters, and consumers of popular culture in Japan and East Asia. Drawing upon this research, he analyzes Japan's "localizing" strategy of repackaging Western pop culture for Asian consumption and the ways Japanese popular culture arouses regional cultural resonances. He considers how transnational cultural flows are experienced differently in various geographic areas by looking at bilateral cultural flows in East Asia. He shows how Japanese popular music and television dramas are promoted and understood in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, and how "Asian" popular culture (especially Hong Kong's) is received in Japan. Rich in empirical detail and theoretical insight, "Recentering Globalization" is a significant contribution to thinking about cultural globalization and transnationalism, particularly in the context of East Asian cultural studies.

Writing Across Culture: An Introduction to Study Abroad and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Wagner, Kenneth / Magistrale, Tony, PUBLISHER: Lang, Peter, Publishing Inc., This book is about culture shock and the writing process. For a student, the relationship between writing and the challenge of living in a foreign culture may not be obvious. The purpose of "Writing Across Culture is to aid the student in documenting and analyzing the connection. If culture can be broadly defined as the unwritten rules of every-day life, one effective method for learning these rules is to write about them as they are discovered. In this way, it is possible to see writing as a tool for cultural inquiry and comprehension, and, hence, an antidote for culture shock. "Writing Across Culture encourages its readers to become writers engaged in a dialogue--between the individual and the new society--about everyday cultural differences. Buy Now

Reading Skin in Medieval Literature and Culture (Hardcover)

Reading Skin in Medieval Literature and Culture (Hardcover)

Skin is a multifarious image in medieval culture: the material basis for forming a sense of self and relation to the world,as well as a powerful literary and visual image. Treating key medieval English texts and traditions, from romance and exemplum to technical treatises and encyclopedias, the essays in this collection show the subject of skin to be a peculiarly resistant and revealing mode of reading texts, highlighting not the hierarchy, but the interdependency of the senses, and laying bare the in

Mexican American Mojo: Popular Music, Dance, and Urban

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Macias, Anthony, PUBLISHER: Duke University Press, Stretching from the years during the Second World War when young couples jitterbugged across the dance floor at the Zenda Ballroom, through the early s when honking tenor saxophones could be heard at the Angelus Hall, to the Spanish-language cosmopolitanism of the late s and s, "Mexican American Mojo" is a lively account of Mexican American urban culture in wartime and postwar Los Angeles as seen through the evolution of dance styles, nightlife, and, above all, popular music. Revealing the links between a vibrant Chicano music culture and postwar social and geographic mobility, Anthony Macias shows how by participating in jazz, the zoot suit phenomenon, car culture, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, and Latin music, Mexican Americans not only rejected second-class citizenship and demeaning stereotypes, but also transformed Los Angeles. Macias conducted numerous interviews for "Mexican American Mojo," and the voices of little-known artists and fans fill its pages. In addition, more famous musicians such as Ritchie Valens and Lalo Guerrero are considered anew in relation to their contemporaries and the city. Macias examines language, fashion, and subcultures to trace the history of hip and cool in Los Angeles as well as the Chicano influence on urban culture. He argues that a grass-roots "multicultural urban civility" that challenged the attempted containment of Mexican Americans and African Americans emerged in the neighborhoods, schools, nightclubs, dance halls, and auditoriums of mid-twentieth-century Los Angeles. So take a little trip with Macias, via streetcar or freeway, to a time when Los Angeles had advanced public high school music programs, segregated musicians' union locals, a highbrow municipal Bureau of Music, independent R & B labels, and robust rock and roll and Latin music scenes.

Media Making. Mass Media in a Popular Culture.

Media Making. Mass Media in a Popular Culture.

Taking a unique approach to the study of mass communication and cultural studies, Media Making is a volume that presents the current knowledge about the relationship between media, culture, and society. What sets this volume apart from competing texts is the approach taken and the distinguished scholarship. Rather than examining each major medium separately (newspapers, books, magazines, radio, television, film), the authors contend that mass communication cannot be studied apart from the other institutions in society and the other dimensions of social life-each is shaping and defining the other. They hold that media can only be understood in relation to their context-institutional, economic, social, cultural, and historical. As such, this book explores the variety of ways in which the media are involved in our social lives. Paperback. 442 pages. In good condition. A Sage Publication. Buyer collects.
