A Companion to Old Norse-Icelandic Literature and Culture (Paperback; )

A Companion to Old Norse-Icelandic Literature and Culture edited by Rory McTurk. (ISBN ) Rory McTurk is Professor Emeritus of Icelandic Studies at the University of Leeds. Previously he taught at the Universities of Lund and Copenhagen and at University College, Dublin. This major survey of Old Norse-Icelandic literature and culture comprises 29 chapters written by leading scholars in the field, over a third of whom are Icelanders. At the same time, it conveys a sense of the mainland Scandinavian origins of the Icelandic people, and reflects the ongoing contact between Iceland and other countries and cultures. The volume highlights current debates among Old Norse-Icelandic scholars specializing in different aspects of the subject. Coverage of traditional topics is complemented by material on previously neglected areas of study, such as the sagas of Icelandic bishops and the translated knights' sagas. Chapters on 'archaeology', 'social institutions' and 'geography and travel' make it possible to view literature in its wider cultural context, while chapters on 'reception' and 'continuity' demonstrate the ways in which medieval Norse-Icelandic literature and culture overflow into the modern period. Old Norse-Icelandic Literature A Short Introduction (Paperback; )

Old Norse-Icelandic Literature A Short Introduction (Paperback; )

Heather O'Donoghue's Old Norse-Icelandic Literature A Short Introduction (ISBN ). Heather O’Donoghue is Reader in Old Norse at Oxford University. She is regular contributor to the Times Literary Supplement. From runic inscriptions to sagas, this books introduces readers to the rich fictional and historical world of Old Norse-Icelandic literature. It describes and illustrates not only the deceptively novelistic narratives of the renowned family sagas, but also the strange brilliance of Eddaic and skaldic verse; with its vivid mythological, heroic or courtly settings, and the variety of other kinds of Old Norse poetry and storytelling. An introduction outlining the language and culture of the Viking age, when Iceland was first settled, helps readers to appreciate the background against which this literature developed. The book acts as an introduction not only to Old-Norse Icelandic literature, but also to its reception through the ages and its influence on literature written in English. The author shows how a whole range of writers from William Blake to Seamus Heaney have drawn on this body of work, and how it relates to English literature of earlier periods; even Hamlet appears in Old Norse texts. I am located in London and both post-delivery and collection are available. If interested in either of these two options, please feel free to contact me and ask for more information. Reading Skin in Medieval Literature and Culture (Hardcover)

Skin is a multifarious image in medieval culture: the material basis for forming a sense of self and relation to the world,as well as a powerful literary and visual image. Treating key medieval English texts and traditions, from romance and exemplum to technical treatises and encyclopedias, the essays in this collection show the subject of skin to be a peculiarly resistant and revealing mode of reading texts, highlighting not the hierarchy, but the interdependency of the senses, and laying bare the in

Culture and Practical Reason (Paperback)

The main thrust of this book is to deliver a major critique of materialist and rationalist explanations of social and cultural forms, but the in the process Sahlins has given us a much stronger statement of the centrality of symbols in human affairs than have many of our 'practicing' symbolic anthropologists. He demonstrates that symbols enter all phases of social life: those which we tend to regard as strictly pragmatic,or based on concerns with material need or advantage,as well as those which we

The Cambridge Companion to Heidegger (Paperback)

Martin Heidegger is now widely recognized as one of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth century. He transformed mainstream philosophy by defining its central task as asking the 'question of being'. His thought has contributed to the turn to hermeneutics and to postmodernism and poststructuralism. Moreover, the disclosure of his deep involvement in Nazism has provoked much debate about the relation of philosophy to politics. This edition brings to the fore other works,as well as alternative approache

Writing Across Culture: An Introduction to Study Abroad and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Wagner, Kenneth / Magistrale, Tony, PUBLISHER: Lang, Peter, Publishing Inc., This book is about culture shock and the writing process. For a student, the relationship between writing and the challenge of living in a foreign culture may not be obvious. The purpose of "Writing Across Culture is to aid the student in documenting and analyzing the connection. If culture can be broadly defined as the unwritten rules of every-day life, one effective method for learning these rules is to write about them as they are discovered. In this way, it is possible to see writing as a tool for cultural inquiry and comprehension, and, hence, an antidote for culture shock. "Writing Across Culture encourages its readers to become writers engaged in a dialogue--between the individual and the new society--about everyday cultural differences. Buy Now
