Den enormen Rechercheaufwand des Autors förderte Aspekte der Persönlichkeit Darwins und auch der allgemeinen Lebensumstände zutage, die man bisher nie zur Kenntnis nehmen konnte. Das ist zum einen interessant und aufschlussreich, zum anderen ermöglicht es vor allem die Beurteilung oder zumindest Einschätzung verschiedener Motive, die im Allgemeinen unberücksichtigt blieben. Der farbigen und einfühlsamen Darstellungsweise der Forschungsreisen etwa fehlt bei aller wissenschaftlichen Qualität jede Trockenheit, was sonst nur hochwertige Fernsehdokumentationen fertig bringen. Und indem man Darwin und seine Zeitgenossen gleichsam persönlich kennen lernt, treten einige hoch interessante menschliche Aspekte hervor, die dem Leser die Einschätzung Darwins als Person erleichtern, was typisch ist für die ganzheitliche Sichtweise des Autors: Braem zeigt den Menschen Darwin in seine Zeit. Die Kirche stellte damals die Instanz dar, die das Bewusstsein der Menschen fest im Griff hatte, und an dieser Weltsicht hatte niemand zu zweifeln: Egal was die Wissenschaft zeigte, das Primat der Schöpfung musste bei Gott verbleiben. Braem zeigt, dass Ämter, Neueinstellung und soziale Anerkennung für jeden Schöpfungsleugner in höchster Gefahr waren. Wer Gottes Schöpfungsakt öffentlich auch nur anzweifelte drohte die soziale Isolation. Man macht sich im 21. Jahrhundert nicht leicht klar, wie umfassend die Macht der Kirche als Leitideologie war. Braem zeigt das ebenso seriös wie konkret nachvollziehbar. Diese Biografie ist geprägt von kompromisslosem wissenschaftlichen Rechercheaufwand, tiefem Sachverstand und einem zugleich erfrischend humorvollen und unvoreingenommen anderen Betrachtungsansatz der Dinge, die Charles Darwins Leben und Arbeit bestimmten.
