Carsten Niebuhr traveled to Arabia at the invitation of the King of Denmark with five others. They dressed as Muslims so they could travel on a ship of pilgrims headed to Mecca. He stayed from and was the only survivor from the expedition. On his return he wrote Travels to Arabia and this two volume set. A very expensive publication with very high quality engraved illustrations and maps. Dutch edition was one of just three published during Nieburhr's lifetime. Part 2 has 456 pages. Contemporary half calf.These copies are in incredible condition with solid bindings and no evidence of water damage. There is some scuffing on the leather spine and the leather corners (slightly bumped).I count 125 plates and maps (7 folding including the famous, large, nine-fold map of Yemen and a large map of Sinus Arabicus). Das andere Erzählen: Gegenstand der Untersuchung ist die Novelle als nur scheinbar allzu bekanntes 'Haustier' (Theodor Mundt) der deutschen Literatur, deren Poetologie im Kontext einer wieder in den Fokus des Forschungsinteresses gerückten Gattungspoetik eine Neubewertung erfährt. An den literarhistorischen Umbruchszeiten um und um wird gezeigt, wie die Novelle im ästhetischen Einspruch gegen normative Verfestigungen einer sich etablierenden Gattungspoetik die Möglichkeiten eines alternativen, gleichsam experimentellen Erzählens auslotet. Während sie sich um als randständige, noch unbestimmte Form vor allem gegen die Ordnungsstrategien des Romans wendet, hat sich die Novelle um zur am stärksten regulierten Erzählgattung entwickelt. Zu beiden Zeiten entfaltet sie gleichermaßen das Störpotential eines anderen, unzeitgemäßen Erzählens, wodurch sie zum Refl exionsraum aktuellster semiotischer, medialer und poetologischer Fragen avanciert. Es zeigt sich, dass auch und gerade die in der Forschung als kanonische Vertreter der Gattung gehandelten Texte einem anderen Erzählen verpflichtet sind, das einen Kern novellistischer Poetologie und eine Triebfeder literarischer Innovation darstellt.
