A Varroa floor which provides an effective addition to the beekeeper's fight against the Varroa mite. Natural Varroa-drop occurs throughout the season, and with a solid floor the mite simply hitches a lift with the next passing bee back on to the comb.With an open-mesh floor, the mites fall through the mesh onto the ground. A rear-fitting tray is also supplied to enable monitoring of mites and is usually only inserted for those few days but can also be left in place throughout the year. The floor has the added advantage of giving improved ventilation, especially important over the winter period. (Current thinking is that floors should be closed in before February to cut down on draughts and encourage early brood rearing).This floor has a traditional flighting-board and a new design of entrance to the brood box which makes it easier to defend against robbers. The mesh is fitted below the level of the floor and together with the bottom bee space of the National system ensures plenty room for manipulation of frames and clearance of detritus by bees. The floor has been made in hardwood, and as such,has a much longer life expectancy than softwood.The mesh is galvanised. Langstroth and Smith designs are also available.
