This earthenware, terracotta pot was used in the villages of the Lobi people as a vessel to keep water. As you can see in the pictures it has a lid closing the container tightly off. Both lid and pot are beautifully decorated attesting of great craftmanship.Contrary to the better known wooden figures of the Lobi, these pots were usually made by women.The pot is about 8 years in my collection and was self-collected in a village close to Gaoua, Lobiland, Burkina Faso. They are in fair condition for their age although the gilded brass has worn and both bases have fine cracks. None of this however takes away their extravagant look and beautifully detailed dolphins which were originally designed by George John Vulliamy in the 19th century to decorate the bases of lamp posts along the river Thames. This dolphin design can be seen at the Victoria and Albert embankments, and I have even seen them in Spain. The style of these candlesticks was probably influenced by the Yablochkov candle.
