The large-scale production of military sake memorial cups only really began after the victories in the first Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars. The standard Japanese Kanji characters, such as what kind of cup it was or which regiment, were made with a stamp. The name of the soldier was hand-painted on the cup. The text on three cups has been deciphered. Both lid and pot are beautifully decorated attesting of great craftmanship.Contrary to the better known wooden figures of the Lobi, these pots were usually made by women.The pot is about 8 years in my collection and was self-collected in a village close to Gaoua, Lobiland, Burkina Faso.
