FOR SALE: ANTIQUE VICTORIAN QUART JUG WITH OFFICIAL EXCISE MARK. This is an old Victorian Quart Jug complete with the official mark (faint but very legible) with the Victorian Crown and the markings “VR 490”. It was originally my grandmother’s jug and is at least 120 years old. It was probably used to measure beer as my grandmother was landlady at a pub in the Cotswolds. Dimensions: Height: 16 cm (6.25 inches) Width at base: 12 cm (4.5 inches) It has a horizontal crack and the glazing is crazed in places as might be expected of an item of this age. Height, with handle, 14 inches (35.5 cm) Width, including handle and spout, 16 inches (40.5 cm). Bass is clearly brass, but the jug appears to have been cleaned down to the bass metal (see photos). In excellent condition considering age, three very minor surface dents. Use as a display item from a bygone era or as an unusual watering can for house plants and outdoor pots.
