An 18th century mahogany wooden tea caddy manufactured during the English George III period about . The tea caddy is made from pine, oak and mahogany vineer and glued with very thick (hand-)sawed mahogany veneer. The tea caddy is decorated with sawed brass ornaments, key entrance and handle on the lid. In addition to all the original fittings, the hinges and lock are also original, unfortunately a working key is missing. The inside presumably once had partitions and/or compartments. The tea caddy rests on the four original cast brass claw feet. The entire tea caddy has a nice warm red-brown colour and patina and a nice satin shine due to the authentic wax layer! THIS IS AN INTERESTING OLD TEA CADDY THAT NEEDS A LITTLE TLC TO THE LID WHICH, ALTHOUGH CONTEMPORARY WITH THE CADDY POT, NEEDS PERHAPS A SILVERSMITH (OR SOMEONE HANDY), TO REALIGN THE RIM WHICH HAS BENT A LITTLE OVER THE YEARS PREVENTING A CLOSE FIT ON CLOSING. THIS ASPECT, THOUGH, WOULD NOT TAKE MUCH TO DO. AT THE MOMENT THE LID DOES NOT FIT CLOSELY OR TIGHTLY. THE CADDY IS DATED IN A CENTRAL CARTOUCHE AREA WHICH ALSO SHOWS THE ORIGINAL OWNERS INITIALS (D.G).
