Once the canoe reached the point where it can no longer be repaired, or if the owner dies, they cut off the bow at pretty important canoes. Clay pots are quite rare in old collections, because they are very fragile. This piece originally comes from the collection of a long-deceased Berlin colonial official, whose grandchildren made it available to the art market, and it is happily awaiting a new owner, who will make sure that is does not break in the next 100 years...
