This is a classic cooking pot for everyday use from the Iatmul tribe from the Sepik river. It’s an ancient piece with crusty patina from a long period of use. Clay pots are quite rare in old collections, because they are very fragile. This piece originally comes from the collection of a long-deceased Berlin colonial official, whose grandchildren made it available to the art market, and it is happily awaiting a new owner, who will make sure that is does not break in the next 100 years... Once the canoe reached the point where it can no longer be repaired, or if the owner dies, they cut off the bow at pretty important canoes.
