This ribbon comes from an orginial unissued bundle of 100 ribbons (see scan which displays the maker label(the label is not included in the sale)) and is jagged cut at each end. The label has the name of the manufacturer on the top line and then reads 'Bander fur Kriegsverdienstkreuz II. Kl. 100 Stuck'=Ribbon for the War Merit Cross 2nd Class 100 pieces. The piece in this auction is nearly enough to do two medals.

The Iron Cross First Class With Attached Bar was worn by German soldiers who had earned the Iron Cross First Class in both the First and Second World Wars. Officially, the bar, or "spang," was awarded separately and pinned to the uniform above the Iron Cross separately. However, to make it simpler to transfer the medal and bar from one uniform to another, and to ensure that the bar and medal were neatly lined up, many German soldiers had the single piece made privately by jewelers.
