A WWII KRIEGSMARINE SHIPS LOG. I BELIEVE THAT THIS INSTRUMENT WAS MANUFACTURED BY THE GERMAN FIRM `LUDOLPH`WHO ALSO PRODUCED SHIPS COMPASSES(WHILST DOING SOME RESEARCH ON THE ITEM I FOUND AN IDENTICAL INSTRUMENT IN EVERY WAY THAT HAD THE NAME `LUDOLPH` ON THE FACE OF THE INSTRUMENT. THE INSTRUMENT AS YOU ARE PROBABLY AWARE WAS USED TO MEASURE DISTANCE TRAVELLED BY THE SHIP BY MEANS OF A LINE ATTACHED TO THE DRIVE SHAFT ON THE REAR OF THE INSTRUMENT. THE OTHER END OF THE LINE WAS ATTACHED TO A VANED DEVICE CALLED A `FIN`WHICH WHEN THROWN INTO THE WATER FROM THE STERN OF A MOVING SHIP ROTATED THE LINE AND THUS THE DRIVE SHAFT OF THE INSTRUMENT WHICH IN TURN MEASURED THE DISTANCE TRAVELLED BY MEANS OF A ROW OF 6 NUMBERS ON THE INSRUMENT FACE. SADLY THERE IS NO `FIN`TO GO WITH THE INSTRUMENT WHICH IS HOW I BOUGHT IT MANY YEARS AGO. THE INSTRUMENT STILL WORKS BY ROTATING THE DRIVE SHAFT ANTI-CLOCKWISE WHICH GRADUALLY ROTATES THE NUMBERS IN AN UPWARDS DIRECTION.TO RESET THE NUMBERS THERE IS A SMALL KNURLED KNOB ON THE SIDE OF THE HOUSING WHICH IS ROTATED IN AN ANT-CLOCKWISE DIRECTION MOVING ALL THE NUMBERS A ROW AT A TIME WHICH IS ACCOMPANIED BY AN AUDIBLE `CLICK`WHEN ZERO IS REACHED. THE INSTRUMENT IS IN OVERALL EXCELLENT CONDITION FOR ITS AGE WITH JUST ONE SMALL CREASE TO THE SIDE OF THE HOUSING. IT HAS THE ACTUAL REMOVABLE MOUNTING CLAMP THAT WAS FIXED TO THE STERN OF THE SHIP,INTO WHICH THE INSTRUMENT IS FIXED/REMOVED BY MEANS OF LIFTING THE SMALL KNOB ON THE TOP OF THE CLAMP. ALSO THE ATTACHMENT HOOK FOR THE LINE IS ALSO PRESENT. IT IS MARKED ON THE OUTER RIM OF THE FACE WITH THE KRIEGSMARINE STAMP WITH THE `M`UNDERNEATH AND WHAT MUST BE THE MAKERSMODEL/PATTERN NUMBER (WR ),APART FROM THAT I CAN FIND NO OTHER NUMBERS. *YOU WILL NOTICE IN THE ATTACHED PICTURES THAT I HAVE TEMPORARILY STUCK A SMALL DOT OF MASKING TAPE OVER THE S------- SYMBOL OF THE KRIEGSMARINE INSIGNIA,(JUST WHILE I TOOK THE PICTURES)THIS HAS NOW OF COURSE BEEN REMOVED. I DID THIS BECAUSE I REALISE THAT THE SYMBOL STILL UPSETS MANY PEOPLE,ALSO I DID NOT WANT TO COMPROMISE ANY POSTING RULES,SO DECIDED THAT THIS WAS THE BEST COURSE OF ACTION. I CAN ADD NOTHING FURTHER ABOUT THE INSTRUMENT EXCEPT TO SAY THAT IT’S A VERY INTERESTING PIECE OF THIRD REICH MEMORABILIA AND HOPEFULLY WILL APPEAL TO A COLLECTOR OF ITEMS FROM THAT PERIOD.
