Sometimes the lavoir was covered, but ladies would kneel in the box alongside the water and beat their washing with the paddle. It measures W 47 x D 32 x H 36 cms and is hand painted in Belgrave Blue chalk paint and waxed and polished to a high standard in a `shabby chic` style. Ideal for display, or use as a bookcase, and a great talking point with some provenance. Nowadays the lavoirs in France are covered with beautiful wild flowers. Buyer collects or arrange own courier. Hand-written markings inside each shoe. 9B also appears on sole of shoe, which would infer the size, but would probably fit 7. Patches of wear, especially to toe on left shoe, and creasing, as would be expected. BOX Black cardboard with blue illustration of Piazzi di Santa Trinita, Firenze, Italy and writing.
