Info:Leendert (Leo) Gestel (Woerden, November - Hilversum, November ) was a Dutch painter and book-cover designer. His father Willem Gestel, was a house painter and director of the Woerdense Avondteekenschool, who gave him his first drawing lessons. He was also taught by Dimming Gestel, an uncle from Eindhoven. Leo Gestel then went to the Rijksnormaalschool voor Teekenonderwijs (drawing courses) in Amsterdam and took evening classes at the State Academy of Fine Arts. In Leo started as an artist in an attic on the Tweede Jan Steenstraat in Amsterdam, even though his father did not approve of the uncertain prospects of an artist. This attic became quickly known as the Jan Steen attic, where Amsterdam artists and art lovers would meet. Gestel’s friends called him Leendert Leonardo, after Leonardo da Vinci, abbreviated to Leo. Both parents have been tested, eyes are all clear with no problems and hips on the dad are excellent and mums are good. The puppies are all full of energy, thriving, mischievious and a good healthy size. Puppies are being brought up in a busy household with kids and other dogs. Carsten Niebuhr traveled to Arabia at the invitation of the King of Denmark with five others. They dressed as Muslims so they could travel on a ship of pilgrims headed to Mecca. He stayed from and was the only survivor from the expedition. On his return he wrote Travels to Arabia and this two volume set. A very expensive publication with very high quality engraved illustrations and maps. Dutch edition was one of just three published during Nieburhr's lifetime. Part 2 has 456 pages. Contemporary half calf.These copies are in incredible condition with solid bindings and no evidence of water damage. There is some scuffing on the leather spine and the leather corners (slightly bumped).I count 125 plates and maps (7 folding including the famous, large, nine-fold map of Yemen and a large map of Sinus Arabicus). It appears that every original plate remains in the book. Read More
