Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. Info:Leendert (Leo) Gestel (Woerden, November - Hilversum, November ) was a Dutch painter and book-cover designer. His father Willem Gestel, was a house painter and director of the Woerdense Avondteekenschool, who gave him his first drawing lessons. He was also taught by Dimming Gestel, an uncle from Eindhoven. Leo Gestel then went to the Rijksnormaalschool voor Teekenonderwijs (drawing courses) in Amsterdam and took evening classes at the State Academy of Fine Arts. In Leo started as an artist in an attic on the Tweede Jan Steenstraat in Amsterdam, even though his father did not approve of the uncertain prospects of an artist. This attic became quickly known as the Jan Steen attic, where Amsterdam artists and art lovers would meet. Gestel’s friends called him Leendert Leonardo, after Leonardo da Vinci, abbreviated to Leo. Gestel continued to use this name for the rest of his life. Read more

Vrouw Grobelaar and Her Leading Cases Seventeen Short

Vrouw Grobelaar and Her Leading Cases Seventeen Short Stories: pubOne.info present you this new edition. The Vrouw Grobelaar, you must know, is a lady of excellent standing, as much by reason of family connections (for she was a Viljoen of the older stock herself, and buried in her time three husbands of estimable parentage) as of her wealth. Her farms extended from the Ringkop on the one side to the Holgaatspruit on the other, which is more than a day&apos s ride and her stock appears to be of that ideal species which does not take rinderpest. Her Kafirs were born on the place, and will surely die there, for though the old lady is firmly convinced that she rules them with a rod of iron, the truth is she spoils them atrociously and were it not that there is an excellent headman to her kraals, the niggers would soon grow pot-bellied in idleness.
