THE SEARCH FOR SHANGRI-LA - A Journey Into Tibetan History, Charles Allen

THE SEARCH FOR SHANGRI-LA - A Journey Into Tibetan History, Charles Allen

HARDCOVER, pages crisp and clean book itself VG /excellent, dust jacket good plus, condition. The idea of a hidden refuge, a paradise far from the stresses of modern life, has universal appeal. In the writer James Hilton coined the word 'Shangri-La' to describe such a place, when he gave that name to a hidden valley in the Himalayas in his novel LOST HORIZON. In THE SEARCH FOR SHANGRI-LA acclaimed traveller and writer Charles Allen explores the myth behind the story. He tracks down the sources that Hilton drew upon in writing his popular romance, and then sets out to discover what lies behind the legend that inspired him. In the course of a lively and amusing account of his four journeys into Tibet, Allen also gives us a controversial new reading of the country's early history, shattering our notions of Tibet as a Buddhist paradise and restoring the mysterious pre-Buddhist religion of Bon to its rightful place in Tibetan culture. He also locates the lost kingdom of Shang-shung and, in doing so, the original Shangri-La itself: in an astounding gorge beyond the Himalayas, full of extraordinary ruins. pick up from Tollcross, Edinburgh. paul can post to UK for an Extra £3.00 Ad ID: Delivery Services Consumer Credit

The Man Who Ate His Boots: The Tragic History of the Search

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Brandt, Anthony, PUBLISHER: Anchor Books, The enthralling and often harrowing history of the adventurers who searched for the Northwest Passage, the holy grail of nineteenth-century British exploration. After the triumphant end of the Napoleonic Wars in , the British took it upon themselves to complete something they had been trying to do since the sixteenth century: find the fabled Northwest Passage, a shortcut to the Orient via a sea route over northern Canada. For the next thirty-five years the British Admiralty sent out expedition after expedition to probe the ice-bound waters of the Canadian Arctic in search of a route, and then, after , to find Sir John Franklin, the Royal Navy hero who led the last of these Admiralty expeditions and vanished into the maze of channels, sounds, and icy seas with two ships and 128 officers and men. In "The Man Who Ate His Boots, " Anthony Brandt tells the whole story of the search for the Northwest Passage, from its beginnings early in the age of exploration through its development into a British national obsession to the final sordid, terrible descent into scurvy, starvation, and cannibalism. Sir John Franklin is the focus of the book but it covers all the major expeditions and a number of fascinating characters, including Franklin's extraordinary wife, Lady Jane, in vivid detail. "The Man Who Ate His Boots" is a rich and engaging work of narrative history that captures the glory and the folly of this ultimately tragic enterprise. "From the Hardcover edition."

Blackfoot Physics: A Journey Into the Native American

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Peat, F. David, PUBLISHER: Phanes Press, One summer in the s, theoretical physicist F. David Peat went to the Blackfoot Sun Dance ceremony in Alberta, Canada. Having spent all his life steeped in and influenced by linear Western science, he was entranced by the Native American worldview and, through dialogue circles between scientists and Native Elders, he began to explore it in greater depth. Blackfoot Physics is the account of his discoveries. In an edifying synthesis of anthropology, history, metaphysics, cosmology, and quantum theory, Peat compares the medicines, the myths, the languages, indeed the entire perceptions of reality of the Western and indigenous peoples. What becomes apparent is the amazing resemblance between indigenous teachings and some of the insights that are emerging from modern science, a congruence that is as enlightening about the physical universe as it is about the circular evolution of humanity's understanding. Through Peat's insightful observations, he extends our understanding of ourselves, our understanding of the universe, and how the two intersect in a meaningful vision of human life in relation to a greater reality. Blackfoot Physics is a book that will captivate anyone with an interest in the relationship between science, spirituality, and the different ways of knowing.

"The History of North East Shipbuilding", Dougan, D., George Allen & Unwin, London ()

* Pre-owned book with hardcover * Condition (book): good (unmarked pages) * Condition (dust jacket): fair * 258 pages (plus 8 monochrome plates holding 18 illustrations) At the end of the 19th century, the United Kingdom produced four out of every five ships built in the whole world, and the North East coast of England, stretching from Blyth in the North to Whitby in the South, was responsible for two out of those five ships. A government enquiry said that the United Kingdom performance was an industrial achievement almost without parallel. Clearly the contribution by the North East was a substantial one. Together with the river Clyde, the North East of England has been the major shipbuilding area in the country and until recently one of the main areas in the whole world. Yet this supremacy did not start to emerge until about half way through the 19th century when iron began to usurp wood and steam began to usurp sail. These two technical changes turned a craft into an industry and no area was as successful in adapting to the new era as the North west coast. Its natural resources of coal and iron were exploited by a group of brilliant entrepreneurs who literally fashioned the industry. They were responsible not only for organising production; they also stimulated technical innovations. The turbine engine was developed in the region; so was the oil tanker. There are many other examples. British - and North East - supremacy lasted for 100 years. By the 's competition from other countries and an inability to expand meant that British - and North East - shipbuilding had to yield its place as a world leader. Today Japan is almost as dominant as the United Kingdom was at the end of the 19th century. This story of the rise and fall of a great industry is not yet finished, however. In there were strong indications that the industry was going through a period of rejuvenation and reinvigoration, ready to challenge foreign competition more strongly than it had done in the 's and early l960's. Seldom does one biography embrace so many important historical issues and events. Trained as a lawyer in his native Germany, Follen was involved in student nationalism, eventually turning to revolutionary Jacobinism. For ten years, Follen taught at Harvard; he was the first professor of German literature at an American institution of higher learning. His marriage to Eliza Lee Cabot allowed him to move in elite Boston social circles. After his ordination as a Unitarian minister in , Follen combined his interest in social reform (including an ardent devotion to the antislavery movement) with clerical service. Unitarian leader William Ellery Channingand abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison became Follen's close friends. During the last two years of his life, Follen began to doubt his own power to bring about political change and suffered a crisis in self-confidence before his accidental death at the age of forty-three.

Journey into God's Heart - Jennifer Rees Larcombe

In Journey into God's Heart, Jennifer Rees Larcombe writes and epic autobiography that will grip all whose lives have been touched by her and surprise those who thought they knew they already knew her story. Even Jennifer herself has in the light of severe recent tragedies found herself gaining a new understanding of all she has been through. This book looks back at the traumas and insecurities of her childhood, the joys and trials of family life through the most testing of circumstances, the confusion caused by her life-threatening illness and subsequent miracle healing, the pain of bereavement and - the most recent chapter that no-one foresaw - divorce from her husband Tony. "Journey into God's Heart" is an epic saga of a unique woman's journey through the fire. This is an adventure that lasts a lifetime, a path strewn with heart-testing challenges. Written as compellingly as a novel, it presents a completely new perspective on the story told in Jennifer's previous autobiographical books "Beyond Healing" and "Unexpected Healing". Her journey unfolds against the backdrop of the momentous changes undergone by the evangelical and charismatic church in the mid and late twentieth century. Journey into God's Heart by Jennifer Rees Larcombe was published by Hodder & Stoughton in February and is our th best seller. Read More
