Buchanans greatest literary achievement of his later years was his Rerum Scoticarum Historia, initially published in , in which he related the history of Scotland from its origin till the death of the regent Lennox in .. the underlying object of the book is the inculcation of those principles of political and religious liberty of which Buchanan had been the consistent champion throughout his career.
