The Inclusive Society?: Social Exclusion and New Labour

The Inclusive Society?: Social Exclusion and New Labour

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Levitas, Ruth, PUBLISHER: Palgrave MacMillan, The idea of social exclusion is part of the new political language. But what exactly does social inclusion mean? This revised and updated edition identifies three competing meanings of the term in contemporary British politics, emphasizing poverty, employment and morality. Ruth Levitas argues that there has been a shift away from understanding social exclusion as primarily a problem of poverty, towards questions of social integration through paid work and moral regulation.

The Irregular School: Exclusion, Schooling and Inclusive

The Irregular School: Exclusion, Schooling and Inclusive

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Slee, Roger, PUBLISHER: Routledge, Inclusive education has become a struggle around the world for teachers, parents and students and arguments ignite and smoulder around the notions and practices of special education, regular education and inclusive education. Irregular Schooling explores the foundations of current controversies and confusions in inclusive education by tracing the historical origins of both special education and inclusive education to demonstrate the very different, some would say irreconcilable, epistemologies from which they spring. The point is not to demonise special education. It exists because of inadequacies in the general provision of schooling and sought to ensure the care and education of those who were rejected. Over time, however, special education has become as uncomfortable with changing social and political exigencies as regular schooling has. Written by one of the leading scholars in the field, Irregular Schooling builds on extant research and literature pertaining to social justice whilst providing a critique of the present state of approaches to inclusive education. It offers readers a series of propositions for moving inclusive education forward, making it a compelling and important text for policy makers, students of education, teachers and teacher educators.

The Dark Side Of Nature: Science,Society,And The Fantastic

“The artist... will always be a special, isolated, solitary agent with an innate sense of organising matter.” —Odilon Redon“Disturbing,” “hallucinatory”—words that evoke pathology rather than history— have long framed our understanding of Odilon Redon (),a French artist admired by the Surrealists as a precursor in their exploration of the irrational. In this book,Barbara Larson takes a radically different view of Redon, one that does not attempt to deny him melancholia but does go a

Earth Rising II: The Betrayal of Science, Society and the

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Begich, Nick / Roderick, James, PUBLISHER: Earthpulse Press, In Earth Rising II, Begich and Roderick explore several new technology areas as well as their implications for personal privacy, security and the state of democracy in the beginning of the 21st century. In the early s in the weeks before Watergate this book begins with the mysterious disappearance an airplane carrying the United States House Majority Leader Hale Boggs and Alaska Congressman Nick Begich. Decades later, documents surface that implicate the government. Their fight against a corrupt FBI, a morally bankrupt Executive Branch and fight for an open government, fully accountable to the people, may have contributed to their demise. That decades old event became the springboard to the exposure of technologies contained in this book's pages. The book includes: New Underwater Sonars and the Possible Death of the Seas. Marine Mammal and Whale Beachings A Military Side Effect. Energy in the Air and the Implications of Cell Phone Technology. Dataveillance, Security, Privacy and the End of the Road. Information Overload and the Impacts of Technology. Implantable Chips and the New Economy.Using over 300 referenced sources, the hallmark of Begich and Roderick's research efforts, concludes with a discussion of the implications of these technologies and alternative directions that are possible. The 21st Century has begun it is this generation that will determine the direction of our technology as either our master or our servant. Earth Rising II will challenge readers to seek a better direction for the people of the planet rather than the betrayal of our science, our society and our individual souls.

The Andes Imagined: Indigenismo, Society, and Modernity

The Andes Imagined: Indigenismo, Society, and Modernity

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Coronado, Jorge, PUBLISHER: University of Pittsburgh Press, In "The Andes Imagined, " Jorge Coronado not only examines but also recasts the "indigenismo" movement of the early s. Coronado departs from the common critical conception of "indigenismo" as rooted in novels and short stories, and instead analyzes an expansive range of work in poetry, essays, letters, newspaper writing, and photography. He uses this evidence to show how the movement's artists and intellectuals mobilize the figure of the Indian to address larger questions about becoming modern, and he focuses on the contradictions at the heart of "indigenismo" as a cultural, social, and political movement. By breaking down these different perspectives, Coronado reveals an underlying current in which intellectuals and artists frequently deployed their indigenous subject in order to imagine new forms of political inclusion. He suggests that these deployments rendered particular variants of modernity and make "indigenismo" representational practices a privileged site for the examination of the region's cultural negotiation of modernization. His analysis reveals a paradox whereby the un-modern "indio" becomes the symbol for the modern itself. "The Andes Imagined" offers an original and broadly based engagement with indigenismo and its intellectual contributions, both in relation to early twentieth-century Andean thought and to larger questions of theorizing modernity.

Canada's Rights Revolution: Social Movements and Social

Canada's Rights Revolution: Social Movements and Social

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Clement, Dominique, PUBLISHER: UBC Press, In the first major study of postwar social movement organizations in Canada, Dominique Cl?ment provides a history of the human rights movement as seen through the eyes of two generations of activists. Drawing on newly acquired archival sources, extensive interviews, and materials released through access to information applications, Cl?ment explores the history of four organizations that emerged in the sixties and evolved into powerful lobbies for human rights despite bitter internal disputes and intense rivalries. This book offers a unique perspective on infamous human rights controversies and argues that the idea of human rights has historically been highly statist while grassroots activism has been at the heart of the most profound human rights advances.
