The Andes Imagined: Indigenismo, Society, and Modernity

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Coronado, Jorge, PUBLISHER: University of Pittsburgh Press, In "The Andes Imagined, " Jorge Coronado not only examines but also recasts the "indigenismo" movement of the early s. Coronado departs from the common critical conception of "indigenismo" as rooted in novels and short stories, and instead analyzes an expansive range of work in poetry, essays, letters, newspaper writing, and photography. He uses this evidence to show how the movement's artists and intellectuals mobilize the figure of the Indian to address larger questions about becoming modern, and he focuses on the contradictions at the heart of "indigenismo" as a cultural, social, and political movement. By breaking down these different perspectives, Coronado reveals an underlying current in which intellectuals and artists frequently deployed their indigenous subject in order to imagine new forms of political inclusion. He suggests that these deployments rendered particular variants of modernity and make "indigenismo" representational practices a privileged site for the examination of the region's cultural negotiation of modernization. His analysis reveals a paradox whereby the un-modern "indio" becomes the symbol for the modern itself. "The Andes Imagined" offers an original and broadly based engagement with indigenismo and its intellectual contributions, both in relation to early twentieth-century Andean thought and to larger questions of theorizing modernity.

In this vivid ethnography,Paige West tracks coffee as it moves from producers in Papua New Guinea to consumers around the world. She illuminates the social lives of the people who produce coffee, and those who process, distribute, market, and consume it. The Gimi peoples, who grow coffee in Papua New Guinea's highlands, are eager to expand their business and social relationships with the buyers who come to their highland villages,as well as with the people working in Goroka, where much of Papua New G

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Begich, Nick / Roderick, James, PUBLISHER: Earthpulse Press, In Earth Rising II, Begich and Roderick explore several new technology areas as well as their implications for personal privacy, security and the state of democracy in the beginning of the 21st century. In the early s in the weeks before Watergate this book begins with the mysterious disappearance an airplane carrying the United States House Majority Leader Hale Boggs and Alaska Congressman Nick Begich. Decades later, documents surface that implicate the government. Their fight against a corrupt FBI, a morally bankrupt Executive Branch and fight for an open government, fully accountable to the people, may have contributed to their demise. That decades old event became the springboard to the exposure of technologies contained in this book's pages. The book includes: New Underwater Sonars and the Possible Death of the Seas. Marine Mammal and Whale Beachings A Military Side Effect. Energy in the Air and the Implications of Cell Phone Technology. Dataveillance, Security, Privacy and the End of the Road. Information Overload and the Impacts of Technology. Implantable Chips and the New Economy.Using over 300 referenced sources, the hallmark of Begich and Roderick's research efforts, concludes with a discussion of the implications of these technologies and alternative directions that are possible. The 21st Century has begun it is this generation that will determine the direction of our technology as either our master or our servant. Earth Rising II will challenge readers to seek a better direction for the people of the planet rather than the betrayal of our science, our society and our individual souls.

The Dark Side Of Nature: Science,Society,And The Fantastic

“The artist... will always be a special, isolated, solitary agent with an innate sense of organising matter.” —Odilon Redon“Disturbing,” “hallucinatory”—words that evoke pathology rather than history— have long framed our understanding of Odilon Redon (),a French artist admired by the Surrealists as a precursor in their exploration of the irrational. In this book,Barbara Larson takes a radically different view of Redon, one that does not attempt to deny him melancholia but does go a

Moral Blindness: The Loss of Sensitivity in Liquid Modernity

Evil is not confined to war or to circumstances in which people are acting under extreme duress. Today it more frequently reveals itself in the everyday insensitivity to the suffering of others,in the inability or refusal to understand them and in the casual turning away of one’s ethical gaze. Evil and moral blindness lurk in what we take as normality and in the triviality and banality of everyday life, and not just in the abnormal and exceptional cases. The distinctive kind of moral blindne

Environment and Global Modernity

Environment and Global Modernity: This accomplished book argues that we can only make sense of environmental issues if we consider them as part of a more encompassing process of social transformation. It asks whether there is an emerging consensus between social scientists on the central issues in the debate on environmental change, and if concerns about the environment constitute a major prop to the process of globalization The book provides a thorough discussion of the central themes in environmental sociology, identifying two traditions: ecological modernization theory and risk society theory.

The Inclusive Society?: Social Exclusion and New Labour

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Levitas, Ruth, PUBLISHER: Palgrave MacMillan, The idea of social exclusion is part of the new political language. But what exactly does social inclusion mean? This revised and updated edition identifies three competing meanings of the term in contemporary British politics, emphasizing poverty, employment and morality. Ruth Levitas argues that there has been a shift away from understanding social exclusion as primarily a problem of poverty, towards questions of social integration through paid work and moral regulation.

It answers such intriguing questions as: Did people in Shakespeare's time hear differently from us? In what way does technology affect our ears? Why do people in Egypt increasingly listen to taped religious sermons? Why did Enlightenment doctors believe that music was an essential cure? What happens acoustically in cross-cultural first encounters? The ear,as much as the eye, nose
