Archaeology Matters: Action Archaeology in the Modern World

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Sabloff, Jeremy A., PUBLISHER: Left Coast Press, Archaeology is perceived to study the people of long ago and far away. How could archaeology matter in the modern world? Well-known archaeologist Jeremy Sabloff points to ways in which archaeology might be important to the understanding and amelioration of contemporary problems. Though archaeologists have commonly been associated with efforts to uncover cultural identity, to restore the past of underrepresented peoples, and to preserve historical sites, their knowledge and skills can be used in many other ways. Archaeologists help Peruvian farmers increase crop yields, aid city planners in reducing landfills, and guide local communities in tourism development and water management. This brief volume, aimed at students and other prospective archaeologists, challenges the field to go beyond merely understanding the past and actively engage in making a difference in the todayas world.

Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. Kings of Parthia Sinatrukes. BC AR Drachm, Rhagai mint Weight: 4.08g Diameter: 20 mm Bust left, wearing tiara (Sellwood type i) / Archer (Arsakes I) seated right on throne, holding bow. Assar, Revised, fig. 2; Sellwood 33.3 (Gotarzes I); Shore 112 (Gotarzes I). VF.This issue has traditionally been assigned to Gotarzes I, but has been reattributed to Sinatrukes by Assar. Two Nisa ostraca, Nos. and 307, reveal that Sinatrukes was the grandson of Phriapatius who in turn was son of the nephew of Arsakes I. Yet, the epithet T?????O? on his S33 drachms implies that Sinatrukes must have been son of a deified king. If we take the text of a recently published ostracon, reading "King Arsaces, Great-Grandson of Arsaces," to be a reference to Mithradates I who, according to the titulature of the S16 drachms of Phraates II, had surely been deified around 128 BC, then Sinatrukes can only have been an adopted son of Mithradates I. The epithet NIKATOP, "Victorious," on his drachms attest to a great triumph over Mithradates II. Even so, Sinatrukes was soon supplanted in Ekbatana and Rhagai by Gotarzes I, the immediate successor of Mithradates II, then expelled in 88/7 BC from Susa by Mithradates III, whereupon he sought refuge among the "Guti" until about 77 BC, when he made a fresh attempt at gaining the Parthian throne. The absence of both a clear reference to Sinatrukes in the extant Babylonian cuneiform material and tetradrachms from Seleukeia indicates that he never held Babylonia and had no access to its royal mint. With this in mind, we may safely assign S33 drachms to him, as this emission alone out of the fourteen different "Dark Age" types lacks parallel tetradrachms.
