Superb Double - Faced Mbulu Ngulu – Kota-Obamba – GabonIn good state. It dates to the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. On stand.Provenance: Ex –collection of Dr. Ingeborg Bolz, Cologne, Germany. Reportedly obtained by her from a French colonial source. Acquired from her by S. Westerdijk around .Originally such figures were placed on top of baskets filled with human remains by way of a guardian. This classic double – headed Mbulu Ngulu reliquary figure must have been in use around . One face is concave, the other convex in the forehead but concave in the lower section of the face. The “shoulders “of the piece both end in sharp points, the lower part of the lozenge showing a nice patina from much handling. Traditional covering of the wood with plates of copper and brass with embossed designs.
