Professor Alexander Gavrilovich Gurwitsch, was a famous Russian biologist and physician of Jewish descent.Gurwitsch contributed to the concept of the hypothetical morphogenetic field of developmental biology and is considered to be the first author writing of an extremely weak photon emission of biological systems, which he called mitogenetic radiation and today with the means of ultraweak photon emission (also ultra weak cellular radiation), and also the hypotheses of biophotons invoke. In , Gurwitschs monograph "Morphology and biology of the cell" appeared, for which he gained international recognition as a histologist.Later, he took over a professorship of anatomy and histology at the Bestuzhev female College in St. Petersburg. During this time he formed his general conceptual approach to understand biological problems. He was one of the few biologists who possessed excellent knowledge in physics and mathematics.
