Highly Collectible Caucasian Rug - Early 20th century

South Caucasus, early 20th century. This kind of carpets are never big, approx. 100 x 150 cm and they are always of very high quality. Even in that time they were meant as a status symbol. No ordinary carpets. Has been made in great craftsmanship with the utmost refined combinations and nuances. The knot density is unusually high, knots/m², quite flat, wool on wool knotted. This carpet has a central field which is very soft green, a pale celadon. An unusual and rare colour, with symbols of fertility everywhere. The main edge is called Kufic border. Shami means Syrian. A reference to the Kufic writing system and it is an early ornament that appears for the first time during the 19th century and in the first quarter of the 20th century. A beautiful yellow gold on very dark blue background. Can be Karaghasli, because those often have a yellow gold main edge. Condition: in a very beautiful and original condition, worn but not out-worn edges. The green is somewhat more yellow in one corner due to the sunlight. Paradoxes of Peace in Nineteenth Century Europe: &apos Peace&apos is often simplistically assumed to be war&apos s opposite, and as such is not examined closely or critically idealized in the literature of peace studies, its crucial role in the justification of war is often overlooked. Starting from a critical view that the value of &apos restoring peace&apos or &apos keeping peace&apos is, and has been, regularly used as a pretext for military intervention, this book traces the conceptual history of peace in nineteenth century legal andpolitical practice. It explores the role of the value of peace in shaping the public rhetoric and legitimizing action in general international relations, international law, international trade, colonialism, and armed conflict. Departing from the assumption that there is no peace as such, nor can there be, itexamines the contradictory visions of peace that arise from conflict. These conflicting and antagonistic visions of peace are each linked to a set of motivations and interests as well as to a certain vision of legitimacy within the international realm. Each of them inevitably conveys the image of a specific enemy that has to be crushed in order to peace being installed. This book highlights the contradictions and paradoxes in nineteenth century discourses and practices of peace, particularly in Europe.
