Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. Top – notch Spirit Vessel – Dakakari – NigeriaIn sound state. It dates back to the s.Provenance: collected by Dr. P. Westerdijk in situ with several other pieces in in Plateau State, north central Nigeria.Spirit vessels are meant to strengthen the weak soul of the newly – passed – away so as to give it a temporary abode and to prepare it for its final journey to the land of the dead. This custom to make such vessels exists among the people living in a band stretching from north central Nigeria to northern Cameroun (Mandara region). These vessels contain the spirit and houses it. The fluid poured from it feeds the spirit. Here the execution shows a wonderfully artistic degree of freedom of expression in that the deceased is portrayed with an open mouth to receive the essence of the libation before it enters the earth of his or her grave. In most cases, only a head surmounts the vessel instead of a full figure. All such terrific works of art have been created by women potters. Westerdijk found a few of such graveyards outside the villages he visited, only to find that most pottery pieces had been destroyed.Literature: Arnulf Stössel: Afrikanische Keramik, München, , pp. .Dimensions: 46 x cm.Region / People: The Dakakari of north central Nigeria live in Plateau – Benue State.Material: coloured pottery.Weight: 3.7 kg.For the original text from seller, set language on this site to: EnglishSold with written declaration of authenticity by Dr. P. Westerdijk, museum ethnologist and cultural anthropologist specialized in the material cultures of people living south of the Sahara. Sent by registered and insured mail. Read more

Antique Pottery Jetware / Jackfield Twin Spout Punch Pot &

A rare opportunity to acquire something a bit different. There are lots of Jet Ware teapots of this period, but I have never come across a Punch Pot before and rarer still a twin spouted one. A teapot is a round bodied pot, this is an ovoid body. Find me another! Large Punch Pot with twin spouts £65 Tea kettle Bamboo style handle £28 Tea kettle with crabstock handle and spout. There is a small chip to lid and neck rim, £28. The punch pot and kettles are late 19th century pieces, probably made in Staffordshire, from the 's to c. This type of pottery was known at the time, as Jet Ware, although it is often, wrongly referred to by collectors as "Jackfield" ware. It is a red bodied earthenware with a lead glaze. The designs are printed in terracotta red which has then been filled in by hand with terracotta and other enamel colours. I would consider reasonable offers. A teapot is a round bodied pot, this is an ovoid body.    PARACAS NAZCA MOCHE CHIMU MAYAN AZTEC

PARACAS NAZCA MOCHE CHIMU MAYAN AZTEC

Collectors of Pre-Columbian textiles will undoubtedly know that of all the Peruvian cultures textiles from Paracas are among the rarest and most desirable. This textile would have formed part of the central field of a large mantle and dates to circa BC. It is in exceptional condition and comes from an old New England collection. No staining and no repairs. It measures 3-1/4" X 2-7/8", not including the small bits of background cloth that would have separated each figure in the central field. Loose in the frame with no adhesive whatsoever and, as noted, no salt staining. The colors are deep and vibrant, better than the photos (which were taken through the glass frame). Frame will be included with the purchase price. Ideal for one's desk. Shipping and handling in the US is $18; overseas will vary. As with every item I sell, authenticity is absolutely guaranteed. PLEASE NOTE: I SELL AND SHIP WORLDWIDE.
