Ancient Near Eastern Nal Polychrome Pottery Vessel, Indus Valley, BC; beautifully modeled, buff terracotta pottery, incised compartmentalization at top and bottom of bulbous body, incised oval detail at end below handle, handle ornamented with three spherical beads at top, upper portion ornamented with intricate zoomorphic decoration in brown polychrome, flared neck, oval stepped base. Condition: Very good. No restoration; neck and rim fractured, earthen deposits and wear to surface. Dimensions: 6.75" height x 6.5"length x 5.5"width. Westerdijk in situ with several other pieces in in Plateau State, north central Nigeria.Spirit vessels are meant to strengthen the weak soul of the newly – passed – away so as to give it a temporary abode and to prepare it for its final journey to the land of the dead. This custom to make such vessels exists among the people living in a band stretching from north central Nigeria to northern Cameroun (Mandara region). These vessels contain the spirit and houses it. The fluid poured from it feeds the spirit.Here the execution shows a wonderfully artistic degree of freedom of expression in that the deceased is portrayed with an open mouth to receive the essence of the libation before it enters the earth of his or her grave. In most cases, only a head surmounts the vessel instead of a full figure. All such terrific works of art have been created by women potters. Near Eastern pale silver-coloured finger ring with intaglio man and deer. Size R. Age unknown but clearly this is not a new ring. No hallmark so sold as white metal. Condition:  The metal has been rubbed away on the inside of the ring and no longer shines.  T arnishing / oxidization to inside of ring consistent with age.  Provenance: Previously belonged to a man in London who acquired the ring before .
