This Dogon mask came from the permanent collection of the Crocker Museum of Art, Sacramento, USAAccession number: Provenance: - Michael Scanlan collection, USA- The Crocker Museum of Art, Sacramento, USA- Dr. and Mrs. Daniel J. Crowley, USAThe Dogon have a vast array of animal masks which include different kinds of antelopes, rabbits, hyenas, lions, leopards, crocodiles, and three kinds ofmonkeys—white, red, and black. In the early years of the century three to four hundred masks might dance during an important drama. This particular mask is the work of a most sophisticated artist. He has reduced the lower face to a slightly concave plane on which the only features are twoholes which are the eyes. Curving forward above this face is the monkey figure, basically a round form atop an oval one. The arms and back encircle ahollow to create a composition both tense and strong. No details intrude on the minimal and simple but tremendously three-dimensional sculpture in whichthe holes and hollows are almost more important than the solid forms. The sculpture will be shipped via DHL Express with track and trace, fully insured. 1-3 days delivery within Europe. 2-4 days delivery to USA. Properties of locks:Even if locks can be owned either by men and women, locks often belong to women: several circumstances of attribution have been identified. They may be offered to women by their husbands, at the birth of their first son. According to the tradition, the installation of a lock corresponds to the accession of the wife to a new social status, the one of “adult woman”, namely, the mother of a male child. The installation takes place during the “senkuturu” ceremony in which the three stones of the home, symbolising the three elements (father-mother-child) of the family, are placed in the husband’s concession. Other locks are offered to women by their husbands, as a sign of affection and esteem, when young women settled in the village of their spouse. Another practice consisted in giving a door with its lock to a young girl, at the moment when she leaved the house of her parents, to inhabit the hut built by her husband. These locks are part of the personal property of the woman. Read more
