Verlust einer Jugend: U-Booterzählungen gibt es schon viele. Wenn aber ein Überlebender, nachdem er sich ein Leben lang mit Literatur, auch Kriegsliteratur, beschäftigt hat, auf seine eigene Erfahrung in Krieg und Gefangenschaft zurückblickt, dann stellen sich manche Fragen in einem neuen Licht: Was heißt Kapitulation in einer Situation, in der es nur mehr gilt, weitere Verluste an Leben zu vermeiden Oder, wird einmal jemand glaubhaft zu schildern imstande sein, welchen qualvollen Tod die Männer eines Bootes erlitten, das spurlos in der Tiefe verschwand, ein Totalverlust wurde, wie es nüchtern hieß. Wer überlebte, geriet in Gefangenschaft, wurde hinter Stacheldraht seiner Jugend beraubt und alterte vorzeitig. Wie bewältigte man die langen Jahre ohne persönliche Freiheit und ohne die Liebe der Frauen, wesentliche Bildungserlebnisse junger Männer Antworten darauf versucht diese Lebensabschnittgeschichte zu geben. Darin werden auch U-Bootschicksale, gestaltet in Roman, Film und TV, vom Verfasser unter die Lupe genommen. L.-G. Buchheims U-Boot Roman Das Boot und der BBC/ARD TV Zweiteiler Laconia werden einer eingehenden kritischen Interpretation unterzogen. Nebenbei ergeben sich Beobachtungen des Philologen über Analogien und Unterschiede zwischen deutscher und englischer Marinesprache.
