Clinical Guidelines and Care Protocols

Clinical Guidelines and Care Protocols

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hewitt-Taylor, Jaqui, PUBLISHER: John Wiley & Sons, The book begins by placing clinical guidelines within the context of the broader movement towards evidence based practice; it explores the concept of evidence, and defines clinical guidelines and care protocols. These are then examined in the clinical situation. The book goes on to discuss the relationship between them and the exercise of individual autonomy and expertise, and with individualised care and patient involvement and choice. The influence of cost on decision making is reviewed, and a chapter discusses the political aspects of care guidelines and protocols. Finally the book describes the implementation of guidelines and protocols and the barriers to implementation, and makes suggestions for the future.

Mentalizing in Child Therapy: Guidelines for Clinical

Mentalizing in Child Therapy: Guidelines for Clinical

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Verheugt-Pleiter, Annelies J. E. / Zevalkink, Jolien / Schmeets, Marcel G. J., PUBLISHER: Karnac Books, Psychoanalysis has always been a developing field. For the treatment of children whose development has come to a standstill, mentalization-based child therapy-previously known as developmental therapy-is the latest branch on this tree of knowledge. A combination of data from psychoanalysis, infant research, attachment research and neurobiology was of decisive significance in reaching this point. It is becoming clear that neurobiological processes can very well be understood on the basis of psychoanalytic frameworks. These new insights into people's mental functioning also serve to foster collaboration, resulting in an integration of the more relationship-oriented treatments and the more competence-oriented treatments. This book will fill a growing need in mental health care for children and young people: integrated treatment, that is, using several different modes of treatment at the same time when the problems are complex. Treating complex problems in children with new psychoanalytic techniques is expected to add a new dimension to the practice of treatment, one that is interesting to cognitive behavioral therapists and psychoanalytically schooled psychotherapists alike. One step further, mental health care for children and adolescents may well draw benefits from the achievements of psychoanalysis, thus embedding psychoanalysis more firmly in the field of mental health care. To achieve this, not only will the various forms of psychotherapy need to be integrated, but the therapists as well.

Techniques and Guidelines for Social Work Practice

Techniques and Guidelines for Social Work Practice

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Sheafor, Bradford W. / Horejsi, Charles, PUBLISHER: Allyn & Bacon, The latest edition of this classic book continues to provide students and practitioners of social work with a one-of-a-kind resource designed to emphasize the different techniques needed for successful practice. Carefully updated to provide social workers with easy access to the most current information on professional techniques and guidelines and organized to support a generalist practice perspective, "Techniques and Guidelines for Social Work Practice" illustrates multiple ways in which both direct and indirect intervention activities are a part of the social worker's repertoire. Touching upon everything from cultural competence to macro practice, the content of this text is so widely applicable it is an invaluable aid in making the transition to a professional career in social work and a staple of professional social work libraries. In a classroom, it is ideal for use in advanced practice, capstone, and field work courses. Parts I and II summarize the essential foundation elements of social work practice, while Parts III through V set out 157 clearly described techniques and guidelines that can be used by students and new practitioners. The latest edition includes many changes that make it just as essential as previous editions. Techniques deleted from prior editions due to space restrictions are now available at www.ablongman.com/sheafor7e. New techniques include guidelines for assessing small group functioning, family group conferencing, and building mentoring relationships, as well as addressing client concerns related to spirituality and religion and serving the client or community experiencing an emergency or disaster. Following the lessons of 9/11, new content isincluded to prepare social workers to deal a client or community emergency. Information is included on Family group conferencing, a new approach based on the principles of restorative justice about which social workers should be knowledgeable. New guidelines for using mentoring relationships, in which senior practitioners without direct administrative responsibilities support and nurture developing social workers, are included in this edition, along with new guidelines for assessing small group functioning as a means of strengthening subsequent intervention activities with groups. Chapter 14 now includes a straight-forward description of techniques for conducting empirical direct practice evaluation with current illustrations based on students' applications of the most commonly used evaluation tools.

Transesophageal Echocardiography in Clinical Practice

Transesophageal Echocardiography in Clinical Practice

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Belham, Mark, PUBLISHER: Springer, When imaging a patienta (TM)s heart the number of modalities available to choose from seems to be ever increasing and the clinician needs to be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of each modality in order to best answer the question posed. If more than one modality can answer the question then an appreciation of local expertise and patient preference is needed (although, in general, echocardiography can answer the question and should be the first line investigation). The first transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) was performed in (M-mode only) and there were some who doubted that it would find a place in mainstream cardiac imaging. Over the last 30 years the technological advances in TEE have been exponential and have been reflected by its increasing utilization. Currently almost all echocardiography labs undertake TEE and the vast majority of valve operations are performed with TEE guidance. Those who are active in cardiac imaging know that the modality is unsurpassed because of its spatial and temporal resolution and that it is relatively easy to get good images with minimal training. These same practitioners will also be aware that, for these reasons, there are practitioners who bypass the appropriate training and use TEE as a very blunt diagnostic tool. The purpose of this book is thus to give practical guidance to those undertaking training in the art of TEE. It is not an exhaustive text to be used for reference but one that should be used in conjunction with hands-on experience. If used correctly it will help in realizing the true potential of TEE.

Bone Densitometry in Clinical Practice

Bone Densitometry in Clinical Practice

Bone Densitometry in Clinical Practice: Bone densitometry (BD) is an extraordinary clinical tool. It provides a safe, non-invasive window to the skeleton. Through that window, a physician can obtain vital clinical information that enhances diagnosis and improves patient management. Further, much has changed in the last decade to make bone densitometry the especially fascinating field of medicine it is today, incorporating imaging, physics, quantitative analysis, statistics, and computer technology -- all applied in the diagnosis and management of osteoporosis. No text details the state-of-the-art and value of densitometry better than Bone Densitometry in Clinical Practice: Applications and Interpretation, Third Edition. Written by renowned expert Sydney Lou Bonnick, MD, this edition improves remarkably on her highly regarded previous volumes, with a significant update and expansion of material. New chapters reflect densitometry's growing applications as well as the evolving needs of the densitometrist. New material on radiation safety and assessment for secondary causes of bone fragility is included, and the text also incorporates material from the recent ISCD Position Development Conferences (PDC's), both the 4 th adult and the 1 st pediatric. Moreover, an entire appendix devoted to the PDCs has been added, providing solutions to many unanswered questions concerning bone densitometry applications. Comprehensive and invaluable, Bone Densitometry in Clinical Practice: Application and Interpretation, Third Edition offers all primary care physicians and specialists the ideal reference for practicing state-of-the-art bone densitometry and caring for patients with, or at risk for, osteoporosis.

Supervision in Clinical Practice: A Practitioner's Guide

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Scaife, Joyce, PUBLISHER: Routledge, Supervision is of increasing significance in the practice of mental health professionals, especially since the advent of voluntary and mandatory registration, managed care and clinical governance. Little, however, has been written to address the practical and theoretical needs and questions of those involved. In Supervision in the Mental Health Professions, Joyce Scaife, along with her guest contributors, draws on over two decades of experience to illustrate ways of thinking about and doing supervision. Using practical examples, she explores often-encountered dilemmas, including: * How can supervisors facilitate learning? * What are the ethical bases of supervision? * What helps to create a good working alliance? This comprehensive, practical and indispensable text is vital reading for supervisors and supervisees involved in mental health care, including clinical psychology, counselling, psychotherapy, counselling psychology, psychiatry, nursing and social work.
