Supervision in Clinical Practice: A Practitioner's Guide

Supervision in Clinical Practice: A Practitioner's Guide

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Scaife, Joyce, PUBLISHER: Routledge, Supervision is of increasing significance in the practice of mental health professionals, especially since the advent of voluntary and mandatory registration, managed care and clinical governance. Little, however, has been written to address the practical and theoretical needs and questions of those involved. In Supervision in the Mental Health Professions, Joyce Scaife, along with her guest contributors, draws on over two decades of experience to illustrate ways of thinking about and doing supervision. Using practical examples, she explores often-encountered dilemmas, including: * How can supervisors facilitate learning? * What are the ethical bases of supervision? * What helps to create a good working alliance? This comprehensive, practical and indispensable text is vital reading for supervisors and supervisees involved in mental health care, including clinical psychology, counselling, psychotherapy, counselling psychology, psychiatry, nursing and social work.

Transesophageal Echocardiography in Clinical Practice

Transesophageal Echocardiography in Clinical Practice

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Belham, Mark, PUBLISHER: Springer, When imaging a patienta (TM)s heart the number of modalities available to choose from seems to be ever increasing and the clinician needs to be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of each modality in order to best answer the question posed. If more than one modality can answer the question then an appreciation of local expertise and patient preference is needed (although, in general, echocardiography can answer the question and should be the first line investigation). The first transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) was performed in (M-mode only) and there were some who doubted that it would find a place in mainstream cardiac imaging. Over the last 30 years the technological advances in TEE have been exponential and have been reflected by its increasing utilization. Currently almost all echocardiography labs undertake TEE and the vast majority of valve operations are performed with TEE guidance. Those who are active in cardiac imaging know that the modality is unsurpassed because of its spatial and temporal resolution and that it is relatively easy to get good images with minimal training. These same practitioners will also be aware that, for these reasons, there are practitioners who bypass the appropriate training and use TEE as a very blunt diagnostic tool. The purpose of this book is thus to give practical guidance to those undertaking training in the art of TEE. It is not an exhaustive text to be used for reference but one that should be used in conjunction with hands-on experience. If used correctly it will help in realizing the true potential of TEE.

Bone Densitometry in Clinical Practice

Bone Densitometry in Clinical Practice

Bone Densitometry in Clinical Practice: Bone densitometry (BD) is an extraordinary clinical tool. It provides a safe, non-invasive window to the skeleton. Through that window, a physician can obtain vital clinical information that enhances diagnosis and improves patient management. Further, much has changed in the last decade to make bone densitometry the especially fascinating field of medicine it is today, incorporating imaging, physics, quantitative analysis, statistics, and computer technology -- all applied in the diagnosis and management of osteoporosis. No text details the state-of-the-art and value of densitometry better than Bone Densitometry in Clinical Practice: Applications and Interpretation, Third Edition. Written by renowned expert Sydney Lou Bonnick, MD, this edition improves remarkably on her highly regarded previous volumes, with a significant update and expansion of material. New chapters reflect densitometry's growing applications as well as the evolving needs of the densitometrist. New material on radiation safety and assessment for secondary causes of bone fragility is included, and the text also incorporates material from the recent ISCD Position Development Conferences (PDC's), both the 4 th adult and the 1 st pediatric. Moreover, an entire appendix devoted to the PDCs has been added, providing solutions to many unanswered questions concerning bone densitometry applications. Comprehensive and invaluable, Bone Densitometry in Clinical Practice: Application and Interpretation, Third Edition offers all primary care physicians and specialists the ideal reference for practicing state-of-the-art bone densitometry and caring for patients with, or at risk for, osteoporosis.

Clinical Study Guide for the Oral Boards in Psychiatry

Clinical Study Guide for the Oral Boards in Psychiatry

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Strahl, Nathan R., PUBLISHER: American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc., This one-of-a-kind reference brings together-in a single, concise study guide-pertinent clinical information regarding the assessment and treatment of patients most likely to be encountered during the oral boards in psychiatry. The author dispels the myths behind what this test is designed to evaluate and offers practical guidance on how to succeed when taking this rigorous examination. Contrary to the widespread belief that candidates are judged on their proficiency to accurately diagnose the patient they interview or see interviewed, the author of this study guide asserts that candidates are really being tested on their ability to formulate a differential diagnosis. Within reason, the examiners do not care if candidates' diagnostic opinions agree or disagrees with theirs; instead, they want to assess how candidates reason through their diagnosis and if they recognize, based on a short interview, that many diagnoses are possible. Diagnoses are based on DSM-IV to ensure that psychiatrists with different backgrounds and training "speak the same language"-and nowhere is this consistency more important than with the oral boards. Four factors are key to success: Understanding the nature of the exam process as a measure of your clinical, not theoretical, knowledge of psychiatry. Preparing thoroughly by being intimately familiar with any item or topic the candidate mention, that is, if the candidate mentions a specific medication, he or she must also be ready to discuss its indications, dosage range, and therapeutic and side effects. Showing empathy for the patient, that is, taking the time (even if only for a minute or two) to establish rapport by using reassuring statements thatshow care and compassion. Developing a collegial relationship with the examiners, that is, not being excessively guarded or defensive and not inadvertently taking on an adversarial role. In addition, the author thoughtfully provides algorithms for "middle of the road" treatment protocols that will help especially when the candidates experience with a particular patient group is limited. Preparing with this guide in hand also helps alleviate noticeable candidate anxiety. Providing factual, clinical information without extraneous material, this eminently useful text is a "must read" for all candidates in the United States, as well as candidates from foreign countries. Unlike psychiatry textbooks and manuals for treating patients in clinical practice, this indispensable study guide offers a distinct advantage-especially for the busy professional who may not have time to review the full texts of other references-by providing both the knowledge and the insights so essential to success on this crucial exam.
