William Laureston Hedges enlisted into the South African Union Defence Force on the 31 May and was posted to the Middle East to serve with the 8th Army. He served with the S.A 1st Infantry Division which converted into the 6th Armoured Division at the end of and would have been present at Gazala and El Alamein. William first served with 33 Coy Motor Transport Q.S.C then with 33rd S.A Mobile General Workshops Technical Services Corps and finally with the 44th Railway and Harbour Brigade - Tank Corps. William was discharged on the 11February after 3 Years 257 days war service. Service details typed and provided with the medal group when previously purchased, Identity Book Number (not included). A BOXED ORIGINAL DEFENCE MEDAL ( to ) WITH RIBBON AND CERTIFICATE Awarded to MR A C D Penny of Hastings. Presented in original franked box and with ribbon and a note from the Home Secretary, Central Index, Home Office, Whitehall, SWI. The return address on the back of the box The medal shows the uncrowned head of King George VI. The reverse bears the Royal Crown resting on an oak tree, flanked by two lions above the words 'The Defence Medal', with the date top left and top right. The ribbon is orange coloured in the centre flanked by stripes of green to symbolise enemy attacks on Britain's green and pleasant land, with narrow black stripes to represent the black-out. I understand the Defence Medal was awarded to non-military personnel. This person was in the Intelligence Section of the Civil Defence throughout the war and in the subsequent years until the Civil Defence was disbanded.

Frank Nix was born and grew up in the Dutch East Indies. He studied arts at the Hogeschool voor Wetenschap en Kunst Sint-Lucas in Gent. In Nix moved to Bleskensgraaf in the South Holland region of Alblasserwaard. He was chosen to be the subject for the design of the monument for Japanese women´s camps, due to his incarceration in a Japanese camp. [1] The monument was relocated to the Brokbeek park in Arnhem in , where it was unveiled by princess Juliana.In him and his colleagues, Guido Eckhardt and Joost van Santen, designed the monument Women of Ravensbrück[2][3] on the Museumplein in Amsterdam. The artist passed away in , after a short ilness, in Bleskensgraaf. These medals were awarded to officers of the army and Navy in during the first World War.and-Order of the rising sun. This was the first Japanese knighthood. The design is typically Japanese. Using flowers. The Order is the third highest Japanese decoration. The Order was exclusively reserved for men until Ladies were distinguished with the Order of the Crown. Both beautiful and original and in fine, used condition!!!. Two beautiful medals with great historical meaning, which will not be easily found in Europe.
