“Equi-Snap Lead Rope” Made to be safer for horse & handler   The Idea In my job as a farrier I have come across situations where a normal lead rope on a horse has been unsafe for both horse and handler. When the horse is tied up, it is often tied to a baling twine so that if the horse pulls the twine breaks, but this can often be too strong and therefore doesn’t break. If it does break the horse bolts with a long lead rope flying around which could get caught up or cause the horse to tangle or trip. The other hazard of an ordinary lead rope is when leading the horse in from the field or stable. There have been incidents where the horse has bolted and the rope has wrapped round the hand of the handler causing serious damage and I have even heard of one fatality where the person was dragged and then kicked in the head by the horse. The idea of the “Equi-snap” lead rope is that about 30cm down from the clip to the bridle there is a link that will break if too much tension is put on it. The link is basically two rings that are linked together with a cable tie which can break and then be easily replaced. (Available from most hard ware stores) By having the breaking point 30cm down the rope means that there is still something to grab hold of without being dangerous to the horse. Instructions The difference between this lead rope and others is that it has two clips to it, and that it is joined together by a cable tie to the two round rings. Attach the clip that is closest to the two rings to the head collar. The clip at the other end of the rope is to attach to the head collar or ring in order to bring the lead the horse back, but being aware that if the horse pulls again it won’t snap. This clip can also be used if you are in a situation where you don’t want the lead rope to break apart.
