Kashan is an ancient city on the road that goes from Teheran to Isfahan, in an arid region close to the Dasht-e-Kavir desert, and situated approximately meters above sea level. Along with its great rug-making tradition, the city has a rich history and many monuments. As early as the Safavid period Kashan was already famous for the its skilled, artistic weavers; in fact, the city was the home of a royal workshop for rugs, and many polonaises can be attributed to it. A subsequent period of decline lasted until the middle of the 19th century when rug-making was restored to its former splendour.
