Kashan is an ancient city on the road that goes from Teheran to Isfahan, in an arid region close to the Dasht-e-Kavir desert, and situated approximately meters above sea level. Along with its great rug-making tradition, the city has a rich history and many monuments. As early as the Safavid period Kashan was already famous for the its skilled, artistic weavers; in fact, the city was the home of a royal workshop for rugs, and many polonaises can be attributed to it. A subsequent period of decline lasted until the middle of the 19th century when rug-making was restored to its former splendour. Production in that period was so abundant that the late 19th century Kashans are among the most famous antique Persian rugs, and especially the Kashan Mohtasham that were made in the workshop of the weaver of the same name. Oriental handmade rug Qum - IRAN 150 x 55 cm, circa

Qum is the oldest holy city for Shiite Muslims. Evidence of human settlements in the area date back to the 5th millennium B.C. Therefore, the city abounds in history and splendid monuments such as the sanctuary of Masumeh  or the majestic mosque of Hazrate Fatemah. Even though rug production began rather recently, indeed the first looms in Qum were set up around , by a group of merchants form Kashan, the locally made rugs quickly acquired market status thanks to the fine workmanship and variety of patterns that are based on those from the Persian cities with much older traditions. Therefore, we can find Qum rugs with full-field floral designs similar to those of Isfahan or with a central medallion like the Kashans. Other Qum rugs are inspired by the panels of the Bakhtiaris: they are made more finely and with a greater wealth of details than the "originals." The boteh  and zir-i-sultan  have also become classic patterns in these rugs. As to colours, Qum rugs are made in a truly vast range that often includes very lively tones: red, blue, azure and cream are the most widely used for the field, although much softer shades were used in the s. Tabriz is one of the main rug-producing cities in Iran. It is located at meters above sea level in the north-western part of the country at the foot of the Sahan Mountains, not far from the Turkish border and 150 km from the border with Azerbaijan. Rug production in this city has an ancient tradition, furthermore thanks to the influences deriving from its geographic position, Tabriz rugs have a great variety of decorations. Even the quality ranges from the most coarsely knotted to masterpieces that reach the peaks of craftsmanship. The fineness of the knotting is measured in radj: one radj is a unit of length equal to roughly 7 cm. One radj may contain from 25 to 70 knots; the measuring scale is a square with each side equal to one radj. Therefore, a 25 radj Tabriz rug will have approximately knots per square, while a 70 radj Tabriz will have knots per square meter.
