The origin of the designs and the making of these items are rooted in late nineteenth century Persia, inspired by the carpets called Ziegler, named after the Persian carpet export company with its headquarters in Manchester, which at that time had opened its commercial offices in the Persian city of Sultanabad. The main characteristic of the rugs knotted today is the materials used. This is wool spun and dyed by craftsmen according to traditional methods and using natural dyes. Malay is a village in Iranian Kurdistan, Kurdish area. Hence the name Malayer or some carpets. These Kurds are known for their indestructible rugs. They used iron combs and hit these with hammers to tighten the wool so that the hairs stand up straight and fit very closely together, nearly impenetrable for dirt. They are nicknamed "Iron Carpets". The cotton warp threads were made wet so they would shrink,making the rug even tighter. This rug also has this quality.
