Fresh Start for Hens (Melton Mowbray) will have rescue hens available for rehoming on Sat July 22nd. These girls will be 72 weeks old, which is much younger than their natural life span. They're no longer required by the egg production sector so are due for slaughter. We buy them from the egg producers and rehome them into environments where they can live out the rest of their natural lives. Most will continue to lay for many months and will become confident little pets who are happy to be handled (note the pic of one on my lap!) We are trying to find homes for ex-commercial hens who are being released that would otherwise be slaughtered. Commercial laying chickens are slaughtered after only 72 weeks but as the hens are young, they continue to lay eggs for years after their release and make fantastic pets. Fresh Start for Hens rehome hens to a diverse range of individuals wanting hens as pets or companion animals. Hens have begun their new lives in town, city and country gardens, allotments, schools and residential care homes. You don’t need to have a big garden to keep a few hens, they will be grateful for the additional years of freedom you can offer them and reward you with their entertaining antics and probably an egg or two. We are now taking bookings for our next batch of free range hens collections to start on Friday 3 February. We have ISA brown at £2.50 each and white star at £3 each. We have reared all our hens from day old, they are happy and healthy and still laying. Some have feathers missing but they will soon grow back. Read More

Pet homes wanted for ex-commercial hens

We will be rehoming hens on 7th and 14th October, and need to find loving homes for them. We are a not for profit organisation, run entirely by volunteers who work their socks off for these little ladies. We ask a £2.50 minimum donation per hen, which goes toward our rehoming expenses.
