In 307 he became Augustus. He was the first emperor who converted to Christianity. He did so after the battle at the Milvian Bridge in which Maxentius was defeated. In the battle he had the Christian sign (labarum) painted on the shields of his soldiers and then dedicated the victory to the Christian god.
