The Red Foot Tortoise (Chelonoidis carbonaria) originates from Northern South America, where their natural habitat ranges from the Savannah to forests around the Amazon basin. They reach an average size of inches and have quickly become a popular tortoise. Unlike other tortoises the Red Foot has a “loaf” shaped shell that is dark in colour, with light patches on the end of each scute. Their limbs are also dark coloured, with patches of pale yellows and dark reds. They also have patches of colour in their head and face. They enjoy a variety of different foods in their diet including fruits, vegetables, flowers, leafy greens and insects. Tortoises are sensitive, shy animals and should be handled gently. Your tortoise set up should have a substrate of orchid bark, as they like it more humid than other species. Provide a water dish big enough for your tortoise to bath in, but ensuring they can easily get out when finished. Tortoises like to have a place to hide, this can be achieved with bark or a purpose built house. We look forward to hearing from you. Regards Slitherin Reptiles Read more
