Russian icon from the 18th century, tempera on wood. Icon of Christ Pantocrator. Nice representation of Christ Pantocrator, master and judge (“panto” means able of doing everything and “kratos”, strong and powerful), standing with great dignity, penetrating with his gaze the heart of whoever stands in front of him and revealing the truth written in the book that only he can open. It may seem like a terrible image, but his kind and friendly gesture of the hand invites us to get closer and listen. Painted with an open book with a quote from the Gospel. Christ is depicted wearing a red chiton (tunic-shaped robe) and a light blue himation (mantle). The red colour symbolises the Saviour’s human and earthly nature, the light blue stands for his heavenly and divine nature. Dimensions: 44 cm x 42 cm. Read more

Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. The upper part is dedicated to the traditional scene of the gifts offering, which were long the basis of all the pictures dedicated to this theme. It depicts Anne lying down on the bed toward which a group of virgins generally comes to offer gifts (cups and goblets) and fans, giving the depicted event the aura of a solemn ritual. Here, however, the event is more intimate, lyrical, because the baby is brought to her mother, while her father Joachim celebrates at a laid table. The lower part of the icon represents another event of the childhood of Mary: the maids bath the baby - a required scene in all the birth pictures of the Orthodox iconography. The peculiarity of this icon is certainly the representation that the artist composed without trying to merge all the episodes of the cycle, but introducing a distribution of the icon on different registers, which allows the main scene of the presentation of the baby to take a dominant position. In the structuring of this composition a particular role is given to the architectural backgrounds, whose shapes recall theatre wings and Western architectural motifs.U.P.The birth of Mary.Northern Russia, Vyg.Tempera, school of the Old Believers.18th century.54 x 46 cm. Pair of important five-light brass candle holders Please look carefully at all the images to understand the beauty of these objects. Please note the complex and refined metalworking, the six lights are supported by a perfectly represented cherub. The wavy lines and the richness of details undoubtedly draw on a typically Baroque taste. I don’t have any certificate of authenticity because the object has belonged to my family for over 50 years. Weight of each candle holder is 6.9 kg.Size: height 65.5 cm - width 32 cm - depth 27 cm.
