A VERY RARE - ANTIQUE HARPSICHORD / TRAVELLING PIANO c SCOTLAND

This unusual little piano was I believe named a "travelling or portable piano" because of its ease of transportation with removable legs. The travelling piano's maker, James Semple, was a piano manufacturer in Glasgow from and the inscription on the piano indicates that Semple held a patent for a check on the downstriking action. This little piano has a keyboard of only 4 octaves (F-f3). It was designed to provide entertainment and to accompany devotions during long journeys from the UK. I have only found TWO others in existence, one which is in Australia - which was donated by Emeritus Professor Joske of the UWA Faculty of Medicine. The Joske family brought the instrument to Perth from England in . And the other was at an auction in the USA, amount unknown. It is in need of a good home and a good tune! Victorian Travelling Inkwell in Colchester

Victorian Travelling Inkwell This is a fine example of a s Austrian inkwell Probably used by all ships compliment to Wright home to there loved ones And probably lent out by the radio room or ships stores. The push button works brilliantly to open the outer lid revealing The inner inkwell bottle lid with the anchor and serpent witch denotes that it was used by the navel service. It has a little switch (not common) on the right to open the bottle lid. This has the marks PRIV and an Austrian double headed eagle coat of arms on it. When this is opened it reveals a small glass ink bottle witch when the lid is closed Secures the ink inside. The glass bottle is original and has had to be cleaned to check for damage. This inkwell is not Russian, polish Czechoslovakian or any other nationality because has none of the European country had these markings or coat of arms.
