From the kitchens of Gate Burton Hall, near Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, this servants' bell board is believed to have been installed during an update to the Hall in by Alliance Electrical Stores Ltd. Of Grafton Street, London (whose name appears on a plate on the front) and was designed to show servants in which room they were required to attend. The attractive large polished wood frame is 38" x 26" and has behind glass, a number of small round windows with, in one case the numbers 1-25, below which are another 5 windows showing maids' stations on the first and second floors and another for the Day Nursery. It also has the original telephone handset with bell mouthpiece. It was originally wired into a DC current provided by the estate's own generating system. Buyer to collect.

Servant or Butler Portable Bell Box. Very Rare Victorian Antique

Many stately Victorian homes may have had bell boxes so that the Master of the House could ring to say what room he was in and needed attending to. This is a portable version of the same thing. The master would take this on holiday with him. He would run the very long wire (which is original) from his stately room to the not so grand room his servant was staying in. Whenever the Master needed attention he would simply push the button and the bell would ring this notifying the servant. This is in wonderful condition for its age and was powered by a largish battery. I don't know if it still actually works as I have not tested it - only had it on display in our Victorian house. As the unit is very clean however I've no reason to doubt that it could still work but please don't hold me to that! We are moving to a modern house over the next year so I am sadly selling off a lot of the Victorian items that I have collected over the years. This is believed to be a bronze cast bell, it has a lovely sound when rung.The clapper is a round lead ball. The number 12 stands proud of the surface, there is another small impressed mark above it that I can't make out. Height is 4 inch Might have been a shop bell or such since it can be hung.
