Following a study of Politics, he became head of the press department of the Berlin school of politics. He had already had a career as a journalist and an insurance broker. During the invasion of Poland in , Von Monts became head of the Press Department in the German Army in the rank of Gunner. After his wife passed away, he was discharged from active service. However, he remained involved in, among others, the General Government of Krakow as a spokesperson for the German troops. The Nazi leadership considered him to be indispensable in the propaganda war and he was entitled to wear the SS uniform in the rank of first lieutenant. From through , he was granted a job in the Ministry of Propaganda.He used his acquired position for his own enrichment, he took possession of rare goods (including record-players and spirits), which were intended for the troops. This lucrative trade allowed him to enjoy a luxurious lifestyle with expensive limousines and prostitutes.
