Grey surface patina with golden reflections. Obverse: Sea turtle viewed from above. Reverse: Square incuse punch of windmill blades divided infive parts. Inverted stamp.Rare type: R2.Cf: HGC  ; Cop 511 ; Delepierre ; Dewing ff. On this specimen is a smooth shell of a sea turtle. This would be one of the most ancient types of coinage of the city. The city of Aegina experienced a phenomenal growth to the point where it set itself up tochallenge its great rival Athens. In the 7th century BC this important commercial city was the first to mint its coins with pieces decorated with a turtle. Thanks to its powerful navy,it succeeded in not only taking control of the commercial routes of the Eastern Mediterranean but also played a crucial role during the Battle of Salamis between the Greeks and Persians in 480 BC.
