But the two moonlighting engineers were not interested in making a lighter-weight version of any existing wheel design. Working in secret in a small garage near the industrial slums of Munich, they literally reinvented the road racing wheel-or at least, how it was constructed. They rebuilt a truck heater to stoke their homemade curing furnace and fashioned molds from plywood and other readily available materials. The result was a one-piece carbon structure, with thin, bladed spokes that were woven through the carbon fiber hub flanges, and through slots in the carbon rim like cloth ribbon.
